Is Vic West An Authentic Neighbourhood?
A presentation by Laura Tate

Join the Victoria West Community Association for a free Speakers night on Neighborhood Authenticity! Snacks and refreshments provided.

When: Friday, November 15th at 7:00PM
Where: Vic West Community Centre, 521 Craigflower Rd.

Many of us believe that keeping a neighbourhood authentic means stopping change and transition. Sometimes this is true, and sometimes it isn’t. Learn more about different ways of having an authentic neighbourhood, including a deeper understanding of this idea, and examples from other places that have made meaningful efforts to keep and restore local authenticity, as well as even trying to build it from scratch.

Laura Tate, PhD is a Canadian urban planning researcher and consultant. Most recently, she was a visiting lecturer at Eastern Washington University in Spokane, and the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. She has co-edited a book on authentic communities, called Planning for AuthentiCITIES; and she is interested in the way that social and material parts of community life shape each other. Laura also spent several years working for what is now the BC Ministry of Municipal Affairs, and as a land use planner in several Metro Vancouver suburbs.
