The Guys Only program has run since 2013 at Rockheights Middle School to provide a healthy and meaningful environment for male youth. Here, the facilitators reach youth ‘where they’re at’ in order to promote personal development, life skills, and improved quality of life.
The program begins by opening a dialogue where students can contribute as much or as little as they like around the question ‘what was the best and worst thing that happened this week.’ A healthy snack follows as we move into our discussion topic for the day, where participants are encouraged to engage in the conversation with their own experiences and understanding. Topics are tailored to each group, and have included ‘what does it mean to be a man,’ ‘role models,’ ‘fears, worries, and anxiety,’ and ‘momentum in life choices.’ We finish off the day with active team games such as boffer (foam sword) capture the flag.
The qualified male facilitators build positive, lasting relationships with youth, mentoring as well as encouraging the development of peer relationships, leadership, and problem solving skills.
Since 2013 we have been able to reach 480 youth thanks to our sponsors, including the Township of Esquimalt, Coast Capital Savings, the Esquimalt Firefighters, and the Promontory Residents. Your contributions are greatly appreciated, and continue to have substantial impact
